BLACKMAN MOORING!!!!!

posted Wednesday, 19 May 2004

Checking my counter stats, I find once again the folks in Texas just can't get enough of Blackman Mooring or as other folks call it "BlackmOn Mooring" I promised some time ago to write about our experience with this company, so here goes:

Back on Jan 6 of this year, we had a hard freeze and a water line for our ice maker broke in our ceiling and rained water down into our kitchen. We had about an inch of water and our insurance co. called Blackman Mooring. Blackman Mooring sent out a very qualified lead and a trainee that was going to learn the ropes on our house (this did not invoke a ton of confidence in me, but gee, the guy has to learn somewhere). The qualified lead assured me that the trainee would be in charge, but if I had any questions, let the lead know.

They got a couple of guys in to crawl into our attic, and start removing the sopping wet blown insulation. They also did some mopping of what water we had missed. During the crawl in our attic, one guy slipped and pushed his foot through our ceiling. That whole piece of sheetrock eventually fell down, throwing insulation and water all over the kitchen. Would it have fallen if he hadn't put his foor through it? None of the other pieces fell.

They were also tasked with pulling up some linoleum in our laundry room, since the water had gotten under that. They took this big chisel blade on the end of a stick and they hacked at the linoleum. On a side note, our floors in Oklahoma are concrete, we have no basements, so hacking at the floor isn't as bad as it sounds. But I have pulled up linoleum, and you don't hack at it, you scrape it. They ended up tearing the crap out of the linoleum and I pulled it up myself.

Blackman Mooring brought out several fans and this huge octopus thing to dry the walls, floor and inside the cabinets. They drilled small holes in my cabinets and ran hoses from a blower into the holes to dry under the cabinets. They placed fans all over the kitchen trying to dry the ceiling and the walls. We had the fans for days and I think they charged $50 a day per fan (I may be wrong). They finally had one place half way up a wall that they couldn't get dry. I had to convince the worker that he was trying to dry a stud and it would be better to just cut the wet sheetrock out and replace it. They spent 3 days trying to dry a peice of sheetrock that my painter charged $20 to fix.

They did manage to get a couple of rust stains out of my carpet and they cleaned the airducts without tearing them up (something my A/C guy says normally happens) so they get good marks on that.

Overall, here is their report card:

Timely arrival :A+

Initial work : Done quickly, but they did bust a hole in my ceiling. C

Long term work: I had to listen to fans for 3 extra days & I had to tell them how to do their job. F

Admitting they had problems: They never should have started on my linoleum if they didn't know how to do it. They never admitted they overcharged the insurance co. for that work or the extra fan days. F

Would I use Blackman Mooring again? Probably not.

There you go, you crazy Texans. One Okie's opinions of your favorite company in the world. Blackman Mooring (or BlackmOn Mooring)
