The Canada Adventure: Day 6: Monday 6th

posted Sunday, 12 June 2005

We did a little grocery shopping for Eldest today and learned several things.

* Canada has ketchup flavored Pringles.

* Dr Pepper is not a big seller here.

* They do not have Star Kist tuna.

* Stores here do that infuriating 'we charge more if you don't have a shoppers card'. I hate that crap, especially if I'm just visiting.

* You have 'rent' a shopping cart by putting $1 or $2 into it to unlock it. Your $ is returned when you lock the cart back up.

Then we went downtown sightseeing and to Stanley Park. We were told to take the mass transit downtown to save $$ on parking, but we did want to see Stanley Park, which does not have bus service. So we drove.

Stanley Park is huge, sticking out into the bay and has hundreds of trails. It is also surrounded by a sea wall that one man built by himself. We stopped and took pictures of the skyline, of totem poles, of the ocean & got a parking ticket. We also found where they were shooting a commercial, but we think it was bigger than a commercial (way too much equipment).

Then we headed downtown, finally parked and walked around. We were going to go up into the sightseeing tower (which we were told was free, but was $10) but were told that they don't clean the windows, so it isn't worth it. We found a Starbucks (you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Starbucks. In fact one intersection had two Starbucks on opposite corners). We then walked down to the offices of the Art Institute so Eldest could talk with his counselor.

The counselor is a very nice man who spent almost an hour talking about the school, BC, movies that have been shot recently in the area (including the 4th Indiana Jones film). He told Eldest the best way to take advantage of all the school has to offer. I could see Eldest chomping at the bit to get into that school and get started playing and learning everything they have to offer.

Sitting there, I started to envy Eldest. Here is a guy that struggled trying to do what everyone else around was either doing or told him to do. It just didn't work out but God brought about people in his path to tell him about BC and this school. After that, thing after thing fell into place (not to say that Eldest didn't have to do some hard work) and finally he is here. He mustered up his courage, packed up his things and headed halfway across a continent to do what he loves to do. You can't go wrong if you're chasing a big dream and you start off by taking big steps.

We meandered on home, fixed some dinner and pretty much called it a night. Tomorrow, we'll find a pizza buffet and try our hand at 5 pin bowling.
